Manimalayar is a major river flowing through southern Kerala. It originates in the Western Ghats (Amrithamedu) in Idukki district and flows for about 92 km through Kottayam, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha districts. Finally, at Kainakari in Kuttanad, it joins the Pampa River and empties into the Vembanad Lake.

Some important information about Manimalayar is as follows:

Origin: The river originates from Amrithamedu (at an altitude of about 2500 feet) in Elappara panchayat of Idukki district. It is also the source of Meenachilar and Azhuthayar.

Flowing routes: The river flows through the major areas of Kanjirappally, Manimala, Kallooppara, Mallappally, Thiruvalla and Changanassery.

Historical importance: Manimalayar was an important waterway used for spice trade in ancient times. Roman coins found at Kanjirappally indicate the river's commercial heritage.

Special features: Before the advent of satellite maps, this river was mistakenly considered a tributary of the Pampa. However, it is a river with its own origin and course, unlike the Pampa River.
